A Christmas and New Year's surprise!
Naomi Cate Elizondo came into the world on Monday, December 28th, 2009!
Surprise, surprise! Emily and Tony were in Delaware finishing up our family celebrations. On Monday morning, Dec. 28th, at 6:30am, Emily's water broke while she was in bed. Needless to say, a frantic and harried exit from Emily's family home followed, with a hasty pursuit back to New Brunswick, NJ. After filling out the hospital pre-admission paperwork in the car, we managed to arrive at St. Peter's University Hospital by 8:30 or so in the morning.
After a couple hours checking in and getting settled, Emily was beginning to have stronger contractions when her OBGYN discovered the next surprise: Naomi Cate was a totally breech baby. Without the amniotic fluid, there was virtually no chance of Naomi turning into the correct position for birth. So, the obvious choice was a C-section.
Contractions grew strong and intense while we prepped for the surgery. An epidural was welcomed whole-heartedly, since it was necessary anyway. Emily's surgery began slightly after 2:00pm, and Naomi entered the world at 2:35 pm. She weighed in at 6 pounds, 12 ounces; and measured 18 inches long. She was born at exactly 37 weeks - 3 weeks early. One day earlier, she would have been considered a preterm baby.
We are head over heels in love with our baby girl! She is absolutely adorable and precious. We are so grateful to God for her healthy delivery. So far she seems to be developing well and is breastfeeding well, more or less. Of course, breastfeeding is a learning experience and a work in progress for both mom and baby. Emily is recovering pretty well, too.
Thank you for all the warm wishes, love, and prayers sent our way. We are soaking it up and living off of your support - tangible or not. Naomi came home on December 31st and we missed the ball drop while changing her messy diaper! I know many friends and relatives can't wait to visit her. We will be welcoming visitors little by little as we feel more confident. Thanks again!
Love to all and Happy 2010,
Emily
